Michail Antonio - leg

13 March 2025 by Thomas Anderson

West Ham United forward Michail Antonio (34) is currently recovering from a serious leg injury sustained in a car crash on 7 December 2024. The Jamaican international was involved in a major accident, which left him with a fractured leg. Following the incident, Antonio was hospitalised but was reported to be in stable condition. On 8 December 2024, West Ham confirmed the severity of Antonio's injury, announcing that he had suffered a broken leg. The club later revealed that the striker was expected to miss at least a year of football while undergoing extensive rehabilitation. (Source: BBC Sport)

After being discharged from the hospital in early January 2025, Antonio returned home to begin his recovery. On 14 February, he travelled to Dubai for a 12-day rehabilitation programme, focusing on physiotherapy, strength building, and flexibility exercises. (Source: Sky Sports)

By 17 March 2025, Antonio revealed that he was seeing notable improvements in his recovery. Speaking to the club, he shared that he had started working out in the gym, gradually rebuilding strength in his injured leg:

"Within three weeks I was walking, and by five weeks I was walking normally, trying to do more strength work with the leg press. I'm at 130kg on the leg press now, and I can hop and I'm trying to jump. Things are improving all the time, and the muscles are getting back to where they were, which is great. I've enjoyed pushing the boundaries, without overdoing it. I'm a lot further ahead than they might've thought, and things are going well." (Source: West Ham United Official Website)

Antonio’s recovery is progressing well, but a return this season is highly unlikely. Medical experts estimate that it could take six to twelve months for his leg to fully heal. The club is not rushing his comeback, prioritising his long-term fitness over a hasty return.

If Antonio’s rehabilitation continues without complications, he could return to light training in late 2025, with a potential comeback to competitive action projected for early-to-mid 2026. (Source: The Athletic)
